Youth drowns after losing life vest

An 18-year-old Anchorage man drowned in a canoeing accident after his life vest fell off, Alaska State Troopers said. The accident occurred Wednesday evening on a lake near Mile 89 of the Sterling Highway, troopers said. Jeremy D. Rollins was pronounced dead at Central Peninsula General Hospital at Soldotna, troopers said. Rollins was wearing a life vest, but it hadn't been secured properly and he lost it when the canoe overturned, troopers said. He didn't know how to swim, investigators said. Another youth who had been in the canoe was rescued.
